How to Store Firewood Properly — Getting Your Log Store Ready Before Winter

October is a good time to get your firewood supply organised. The evenings are drawing in, cooler days are approaching, and a little preparation now can make those first autumn fires much easier.

Whether you already have kiln dried logs in your store or are planning your next firewood delivery, the essentials are simple: keep your logs raised off the ground, protected from rain and well ventilated. Good storage helps dry firewood stay dry, so it lights more easily and burns efficiently when you need it.

Here's how to get your log store ready for the months ahead.

Why good firewood storage matters

Even properly dried logs can become wet again if they are exposed to prolonged rain or left on damp ground. That applies to both kiln dried hardwood and seasoned softwood.

Wet wood is harder to light and produces less useful heat because energy is used to evaporate the moisture. It can also produce more smoke and encourage soot and creosote deposits in your chimney.

Keeping your firewood dry helps you get more from your fuel. For domestic wood burning, aim for a moisture content of 20% or below and follow your appliance manufacturer's guidance.

How to store kiln dried logs and seasoned firewood

1. Keep your logs off the ground

Use a log store with a raised base, a sturdy pallet or a suitable timber frame to keep the bottom of your stack clear of damp ground.

A raised base helps prevent logs from taking up ground moisture and allows air to circulate underneath. Before your next delivery, check that the base is sound and clear away any wet leaves or debris.

2. Keep rain out and let air circulate

A solid roof with an overhang and open or slatted sides makes a practical outdoor log store. It should protect your firewood from rain while allowing air to move through the stack.

If you are using a tarpaulin, secure it over the top and leave ventilation around the sides. Avoid wrapping the entire pile tightly, as this restricts airflow and can trap moisture.

Check where wind-driven rain enters your store. The aim is to keep the logs sheltered while maintaining ventilation.

3. Stack your firewood with space for airflow

Build a stable stack and avoid wedging logs too tightly together. Leave spaces so air can reach the cut ends and split surfaces.

Stack your logs neatly to make the most of your storage space, keeping the store's ventilation openings clear so air can circulate around the wood.

Keep a gap between the stack and any wall behind it, and avoid building tall, unsupported piles. You should be able to remove logs without disturbing the rest of the stack.

4. Choose an airy position

A spot with good airflow and some sunshine is ideal. Avoid damp, enclosed corners where air barely moves.

Sunshine can help, but protection from rain and effective ventilation are the priorities. A shaded store can still work well if it keeps the weather out and allows air to circulate.

5. Store indoor logs safely

Keeping a small supply indoors can be convenient, but choose a dry storage spot away from your stove or open fire.

Always follow the appliance manufacturer's required clearances from combustible materials. Keep logs out of the hearth area and never place them against the stove or flue to dry.

Logs that are already dry and ready to use do not need a set period of acclimatisation before burning.

Are freshly delivered logs ready to burn?

Our kiln dried hardwood arrives ready to use, with a moisture content of 20% or below. There is no need for additional seasoning or a day or two of waiting before you light your fire.

Our air dried softwood is also seasoned and ready to use on arrival. Once delivered, both products should be moved into suitable storage to keep them in good condition.

If you are looking for kiln dried logs for sale or prefer seasoned softwood, prepare your storage space before the delivery arrives. Having the area clear makes unloading and stacking easier.

When should you order your next firewood delivery?

The best time to reorder depends on how quickly you use your logs and the current delivery lead time.

If you light your stove every evening, you will need a larger reserve than someone who enjoys an occasional weekend fire. Check your supply regularly and order while you still have enough to cover the wait for your next delivery, with some extra for colder weather.

September is a useful time to take stock, check your log store and plan your autumn order. When you get in touch, we can advise on quantities and available delivery dates.
